Pain is Your Doorway to Freedom
Sep 19, 2025The very word pain can create a contraction in the body and mind. We associate it with discomfort, disease, and heartache.
The truth is, every soul will experience pain in this life. It may have begun with our very first breath, exiting the birth canal. It may come as physical pain, a hard knock, emotional loss, or mental turmoil. The form varies, but its arrival is inevitable.
Why Pain Arises
Why? Why the cruelty of disease, war, suffering, heartbreak? This question has many layers, but let’s begin with the first: pain gets our attention.
Our work is not to avoid pain, but to learn and grow from it.
I've experienced this many times in my own life. Moments when I wanted to cling to certainty, control, or comfort — but when I finally let go, what I found was not despair but a deep sense of peace. Pain has shown me a level of calm — the calm after the storm — that I wouldn't have known otherwise. It's like every wave of pain, when met with awareness, dissolves back into the ocean of peace within.
Pain in the Body, Heart, and Mind
- Pain in the body reminds us to refine our self-care practices, listen more deeply, and honour the temple we live in.
- Pain in the heart invites us to open wider, surrendering to eternal love and a higher will. True love is not something we do or have — it flows through us when the heart is open.
- Pain in the mind reveals to us the grip of ego, preferences, and conditioning. With awareness, these patterns can be released, allowing for clarity, calm, and wisdom to emerge.
An Invitation Home
Each moment of pain is a test — will we collapse into aversion, or see it as an invitation to return home? Home to that centre of deep peace, the tranquillity within, that remains undisturbed.
As Paramhansa Yogananda reminds us:
“Stand unshaken amidst the crash of breaking worlds.”
So when pain comes, let it not be a curse but a teacher. Let it be a gift that brings you closer to inner freedom and to the realisation of your true essence, your divine nature.
The Doorway to Freedom
In this way, every kind of pain becomes not an enemy to be resisted, but a doorway — leading us closer to truth, wisdom, and freedom.
Pain, met with awareness, can reveal the divine qualities already within us. In this way, pain can be a gift to your soul, walking you down the path to liberation and unconditional fulfilment.
With blessings,
Jenni
